Arrested Taxi Drivers: Mafia Tactics Exploiting Tourists and Colleagues
Budapest's taxi industry has long faced issues with overcharging and scams, which have particularly impacted tourists. Recently, authorities conducted a coordinated operation to arrest several taxi drivers, or "hyenas," who had allegedly been using mafia-like tactics to extract large sums from tourists and collect protection money from other drivers. This criminal group only allowed other drivers to work in high-traffic areas if they paid protection fees, while tourists were often charged rates ten times higher than usual.
During an operation at the end of August, more than 100 officers and tax inspectors targeted five prominent sites, including Buda Castle, Váci Street, and Széchenyi Thermal Bath. As part of the raid, six taxis, numerous POS devices, taximeters, and other electronic equipment were seized, alongside narcotics and nearly $25,000 in cash from the suspects’ vehicles and properties.
